Industry Categories Explained
  1. Accommodation – refers to lodging of any sort for the traveller where this service is provided for a fee and this lodging is registered with the Barbados Tourism Authority.

    Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: registered hotels, vllas, guest houses, apartments, condominiums and home accommodation. Nominations for food and beverage staff should not be submitted under this category, but under the Food & Beverage category.

  2. Food & Beverage – refers to an establishment registered with the Barbados Tourism Authority and offers for sale:
    1. an à la carte or table d’hôte food menu;
    2. a wine and bar menu that includes a selection of at least 6 wines of both red and white; and
    3. table service provided by uniformed staff.
    Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: registered bars, restaurants at hotels, stand alone restaurants, hotel and nightclub bars; as well as chefs, cooks and kitchen staff at registered hotels, apartments,guest houses, villas, private houses and home accommodation.

  3. Attractions and Activities – an attraction refers to a site that locals and overseas visitors visit which has an identifiable operation and management structure and can be characterised as natural, historical, cultural or man-made. Activities include diverse land-, air- and marine-based recreational activities provided for the recreation of visitors for reward.

    Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: all natural, man-made and cultural-based attractions, land, air and marine-based recreational activities amongst others.

  4. Cruise – refers to businesses and organisations that provide cruise specific goods and services to the cruise tourism sector. Nominations for this category should include employees in the cruise terminal, port, cruise management companies and ship-chandler companies amongst others.
  5. Entertainment – refers to people or businesses engaged in providing services or facilities for visitors to enjoy music, sports and local cultural offerings.

    Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: cabaret or floor shows, nightclubs, bands; as well as musicians whose music directly or indirectly impacts the tourism industry amongst others.

  6. Public Sector – refers to those businesses, organisations, departments and agencies under the purview of the Government of Barbados and companies wholly owned by the Government of Barbados, which provide essential and support services to the tourism industry.

    Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: the Immigration and Customs departments, National Conservation Commission Beach and Park Ranger departments,Royal Barbados Police Force, Sanitation Service Authority, GAIA Inc., Port Health and Quarantine amongst others.
  7. Retail – refers to those businesses which offer goods and services for sale to visitors. Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: duty-free shops and souvenir shops amongst others.

  8. Tourism Services – refers to those businesses (excluding accommodation and food and beverage) whose main source of income is derived from the tourism industry.

    Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: airlines, travel agencies, ground tour operators, destination management companies, airline services, car hire services, real estate management companies, Red caps and beach operators amongst others.
  9. Support Services – refers to those businesses whose main source of income is not derived from the tourism industry but which provide services to the industry.

    Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: suppliers, event planners and training consultants amongst others.

  10. Transportation – refers to businesses or organisations involved in the movement of visitors on the ground. Nominations for this category should include employees or businesses/organisations engaged in providing this service such as: taxi drivers/ companies and coach drivers/companies amongst others.

  11. Community Tourism – refers to businesses, organisations, agencies and communities involved in the development of tourism projects at the community level.

    Nominations for this category should include established community groups, entities and service organisations involved in developing and promoting community tourism, amongst others.

  12. Tourism Micro Enterprises – refers to self or family employment of up to 5 to 10 employees (full-time or part-time) with assets under BDS $20,000 where services are directly or indirectly provided to the tourism industry. Nominations for this category should include individuals and micro businesses or organisations engaged in providing services in areas such as accommodation, food and beverage, attractions and activities, cruise, entertainment, retail, tourism services, support services, transportation and community tourism sectors of the industry.
