Tourism Student Award

The following persons have been Nominated based on their continued dedication to the high levels of service to the Tourism Industry in Barbados during their course of study.

Name: Trevina Sealy WINNER

Place of Study: Hospitality Institute Hotel Pommarine

Description:

A student of the Culinary Arts Department of the Barbados Community College - Hospitality Institute, Trevina Sealy is an intellectual who has the ability to influence others positively. She has interned at Accra Beach Hotel and Spa where she assisted in preparing salads, staff meals and in the butcher shop. Interacting with the staff improved her cooking methods, time management and self-confidence. Trevina’s aim is to graduate with an excellent grade point average and pursue studies in Baking and Pastry Arts at Johnson and Wales in the United States. She hopes eventually to own a business. She is a leader and active member of Maxwell Wesleyan Holiness Church where she teaches sign language in dance to children. For efficiency, she delegates tasks and believes that there is a time and place for everything. Trevina always seeks to give of her best and believes that the island needs to “get back to the basics” and embrace some of its traditional values so that visitors can feel safer and more relaxed. She increases her knowledge with combined Internet research and relevant reading material. She stresses that training and lectures could improve customer service as the positive attitudes of service providers guarantee repeat visits of tourists.
Name: Joy Melissa Roberts

Place of Study: Hospitality Institute Hotel Pommarine

Description:

Joy Roberts attempts to exceed customer expectations, going the extra mile to fulfil her goal of the sustainable development of tourism based on the preservation of the environment and heritage. She is an outgoing, studious and friendly practitioner whose good performance in her studies and recent internship with Goddard’s Shipping and Tours provided her with a wealth of information on tourism. Joy was educated on the functions of the Barbados Port, tourists’ needs and places of interest in Barbados. Her responsibilities included booking tours and greeting visitors. She hopes to become a Tourist Project Developer specialising in sustainable tourism in smaller Caribbean islands. Currently enrolled in the Associate Degree programme in Tourism and Travel at the Barbados Community College - Hospitality Institute, she is always willing to assist. Her passion for the tourism industry extends to her wish to see the implementation of the Tourism Master Plan, which would determine the island’s carrying capacity and so help reduce visitor congestion in Bridgetown. Joy is a dedicated leader who fosters good working relationships for effective teamwork. She keeps on top of her studies and increases her knowledge of tourism through research on the Internet and newspapers.
Name: Charles Andrew Edghill

Place of Study: University of the West Indies

Description:

Charles Edghill’s nomination is a result of his reliability, dedication and knowledge. An outdoor person who enjoys working with people, he currently works at Adventureland Tours as a Tour Guide/Driver and compliments these skills with studies in Tourism and Hospitality Management at the University of the West Indies. As he takes this major step in his educational and professional development, Charles experiences the practical side of tourism through his work, gaining valuable insight into the theories he studies. He believes that the Tour Guide plays an essential role in making the tourist’s visit memorable and thus ensuring repeat visits. Charles’ aim is to meet and exceed customer expectations, desires and needs every time and he aspires to continue in the field, possibly contributing to the Caribbean Tourism Organisation. His projections for tourism in the next five years include seeing Barbados “go green” and the level of garbage reduced. Usually the leader when it comes to group projects or activities, he believes in accommodating other people’s ideas while demonstrating his reliability and extensive knowledge of the industry in Barbados.
